After obtaining his BSLA from the University of Kentucky in 1999, Bill Estes practiced as a landscape architect at design firms in Kentucky, Ohio, Rhode Island, Florida, and Washington. He has gained a broad range of domestic and international experience that includes: community and campus planning, parks, environmental restoration, streetscapes, urban design and hospitality and entertainment.  In 2004 he joined EDSA, rising to the level of vice-president, and was involved in projects in in the United States, Europe, Central and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and he spent 6 months during 2010 living and working in Beijing, China. This experience has provided him with a nuanced understanding of working in other regions, environments and cultures.  His previous projects have won design awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects Florida Chapter, and the Kentucky chapter of the American Planning Association.

In addition to his work experience, Bill has also served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Kentucky and assisted in the preparation of curriculum for Columbia University’s School of Continuing Education. Bill is dedicated to sustainable design and green building practices and has spoken on the subject at several conferences. After completing a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture with honors at the University of Washington, he began working at MIG | Portico focusing on habitat and conservation projects.  Bill is a registered landscape architect in Washington state, Kentucky, and Rhode Island and a LEED Accredited Professional, and he is an active member of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Bill’s teaching interests build upon past experience and thesis research to explore pedagogical approaches to technical education within the landscape architectural curriculum with a focus on topographic manipulation. This exploration places emphasis on the integration of the artistic and problem solving capacities of a landscape architect with a goal of developing greater technical proficiency inclusive of theory, critical thinking, and aesthetics. This endeavor is aimed at easing graduate’s transition into the profession and preparing future generations of creative and technically skilled landscape architects to address the challenges of tomorrow.
